Sunday Lunch in the Haut Languedoc

The unseasonable cold and impressive gusts of wind blowing through the Haut Languedoc meant that lunch on the terrace was impossible.
No matter.
Our friends prepared a gorgeous summery feast today that made us forget all about the weather.  Homemade aïoli, local smoked trout, earthy lentil salad, wine from a co-op in a neighboring village and a cheese course from heaven.
What a perfect day.

Sunday Lunch

We have wonderful friends with big kitchens (ours is really small) and big dining spaces (again...tiny) and big terraces (don't have one of those) who like to have us around for long, Sunday lunches. We reciprocate, but on a smaller scale. Having six around our table is a stretch, having eight means moving large pieces of furniture around.

Last Sunday we spent the afternoon eating, drinking, laughing and watching one of the little ones swim. The house and garden has come a long way since last spring, the site of the nine hour lunch. This time it was about a seven hour lunch. Guess we're losing our stamina...

I brought dessert, but no photos were taken. It was a dense, rich, flourless chocolate cake called (Almost) Instant "Fix" Chocolate Heroin Cake. I used some coffee liqueur and didn't add any nuts. It was delicious and a highly recommended recipe!

Lunch

We spent the weekend having long lunches with friends. Definitely the best way to spend a lazy holiday weekend here in France.


Saturday was a curry extravaganza by the sea which left us feeling very satisfied and needing a nap. Strangely enough, we were able to garner the energy to go wine tasting in the late afternoon...

Sunday's lunch featured gigot d'agneau, roasted potatoes and cauliflower gratin followed by a fabulous apple and frangipane tart, kind of like this. John and Huw are wonderful cooks and we always know to expect delicious food, wonderful company and a fun afternoon when we're invited to John's house.

Happiness is a Nine Hour Lunch

What a day we had yesterday! Nine glorious hours of eating and drinking in the sun with good friends. That's what Sunday afternoons in the south of France were made for!

Our friends were kind enough to host a lunch in the garden of their new house. By new house, I mean they just moved in last week, yet were sweet enough to have eight people over for lunch. Each couple brought a different course to make it a bit easier on the hosts and I offered to bring dessert...New Orleans style bread pudding with Whiskey sauce.



We started the meal with perfectly grilled asparagus wrapped in Jambon de Bayonne and a delicious rice salad with avocado, green olives, red onion and tomatoes in a mustard vinaigrette. Next came garlicky, grilled lamb and involtini (grilled, stuffed eggplant) followed by cheese then dessert and coffee.

We finally managed to drink this Jeroboam from our local wine co-op that was given to my husband as a birthday present a few years ago. It seemed to be the never ending bottle, but we eventually finished it off with the cheese then opened a bottle of Muscat St Jean de Minervois to enjoy with dessert.


It was a perfect day.
