Sunday Links

Traiteur

I've said it before and I'll say it again: If you go to New Orleans, you must try Cochon and Cochon Butcher.

An homage to a certain French fromage.

Sandal weather is almost here. Guess I better give myself a pedicure.

A million thanks to Lindsey for introducing me to the brilliantly colorful life of Will Taylor. I'm inspired!

Why didn't somebody think of this sooner?

A perfectly frothy cappuccino available morning, noon and night? I don't care how much it is frowned upon after 11am...  As Eleonora says, "screw the etiquette." Pin It

New Orleans Food and Carnival Festivities

Wednesday's parades may have been rained out and yesterday was the coldest day I've ever experienced in New Orleans, but today the temperatures are warming up and things are getting crazy around here!

The last few days have been spent visiting with friends and eating. And eating.
Fabulous lunches at Bayona, the Marigny Brasserie, Felipe's and Cochon Butcher.
A shrimp fest last night with Grilled Shrimp with Remoulade sauce, Shrimp Creole and Shrimp and Eggplant Casserole at a friend's house.
More shrimp last Wednesday night with another friend - we broiled up a couple pounds of these sweet, fat Gulf shrimp and served them with lots of green onions and spicy noodles. Divine!

Carnival this year is a busy one. The hotels are full and the streets are packed with revelers. The Superbowl win by the Saints has added another dimension to the customary Mardi Gras merriment.

We're about to head out again today for more celebrating and definitely more eating. I think a steaming hot bowl of seafood Gumbo is on the agenda.
Laissez les bon temps rouler!

Noshing in New Orleans

One can't help but eat like a King (or a Queen) in New Orleans.

Here are a few of the culinary highlights of my trip.

Grilled Sausage and Peppers Sandwich with bread and butter pickle and crispy, salty potato chips at Cochon Butcher.
The sausages, pickles and potato chips are all made in house.

It wouldn't be New Orleans without Hubig's Pies.

Fried soft shell crab Po' Boy from Stanley. Dressed with spicy remoulade and coleslaw. Shake on some Crystal Hot Sauce, and you've got yourself one heck of a delicious, messy lunch!

A mere glimpse of the array of cheeses available at the St. James Cheese Company. They offer sandwiches, cheese plates, charcuterie plates and salads.
I had a sandwich with Gruyère and caramelized onions on grilled multi-grain bread. Divine!
Here's the menu.

Photo du Jour - Bacon Pralines

Edible crack, that's what this is. And I'm hooked.

Bacon Pralines are the most tempting, delicious mélange of smoky-salty and sugary sweet flavors. It is dangerous, addictive stuff. And they're selling it down on the corner, just a block away from my "home" in New Orleans.

I plan on bringing at least a kilo back to France with me. Hope I don't get stopped by Customs.
