Out of Touch

Sitting at a friends house, having a glass of wine and enjoying the comforts of modern life. Like electricity. And the Internet.

We've been without power since 9:30 AM Saturday due to rather impressive storms down here in the south of France. No word about when it will come back on again but we're hoping things will get back to normal by Monday.

Until then... Pin It

Hang in there. At least you have some wine and friends to hang out with. (Here I go again, ending the sentence with a preposition.) Are the pets with you?

Oh, how lucky you have been taken in! We didn't have too much of a mess, even though 17,000 homes were left without power in Aveyron. We were not among them.

Good luck!

Is your refrigerator unplugged? During Ike, we forgot to unplug the fridge, so all the mold that happened while we were displaced got cycled through as soon as the power came back on. We had to buy a new one as a result.

Good luck!

It was horrible up here in the Aveyron. We lost power Saturday but it came back on later in the day. Many trees (large ones) fell and the rivers are so swollen. We had winds that clocked 70 mph! It was crazy. A friend of mine in St. Antonin said they had a tornado. Here's hoping you have power soon.

I hope you have power back on now. I live in the Auvergne and although there was not a complete power cut, the power kept cutting out intermittently all week-end. Then it snowed heavily! Good for the skiing though.

We were without power from 10:30 a.m. Saturday till 10 p.m. Sunday. At least we are well-equipped though -- hurricane lamp, wood-burner, candles, plenty of food (from the thawing freezer) and wine! Oh, and we lost our satellite dish in one huge gust of wind which did a lot of other damage as well. We are used to wind here, but this was something else.

Weirdly, Sunday was a beautiful calm, warm day, almost like spring. Since it was dark and cold indoors, there was an impromptu all-day aperitif on the square as people brought bottles of wine, packets of crisps, and flasks of coffee. We sat around in the sunshine and compared notes on lost tiles, roofs blown off, and trees split in two. We know how to cope with emergencies here!

Hope your power's back and you haven't suffered too much damage.

It's weird that when you're in the middle of this you have no idea what's going on -- no phone (even the mobile network was out), no TV, no Internet, and if you're lucky intermittent radio reception. It was the same in 1999.

Yes, thankfully we were invited to friend's homes both evenings to sit in front of fires and enjoy hot food.
The animals stayed at home because we weren't gone for more than a few hours. They had lots of blankets to snuggle under!

Betty
We were lucky. And so were you to not have lost power!
I'm glad you haven't had any problems.

Allie
Surprisingly everything in the freezer stayed completely frozen and we didn't have a lot in the fridge to lose. Everything was ok.
My friends in New Orleans all have disgusting Katrina fridge stories. Mold is evil stuff!

There are tons of trees and branches down here too. It was very dramatic!
We're fine, our house is fine and we're back up and electrified so we're happy! :)

Mike
Enjoy the skiing!
As soon as the wind started howling Saturday morning we knew it was only a matter of time before the electricity went out. We didn't have long to wait.

It was gorgeous yesterday! We went to Gruissan and had lunch along the port. Our neighbors were all inside staying warm around the fire. Sounds like you had a great afternoon in the sun!
It was strange to be so out of touch with everything. Not used to that.
Glad you're ok!
