French Cream

Cream section at the grocery store.

This is the cream section at the local E. Leclerc in Bayeux. There's so much to choose from, it is crazy!

Crème Fraîche, Crème Entière, Crème Légère, Crème Epaisse, Crème Fleurette, Crème Fluide, Crème Liquide, Crème d'Isigny, Crème Fermière, Crème Crue, Crème Vallée d'Auge and Crème Entière de Normandie. I think that's about all, but I may have forgotten one or two.

And don't even get me started on the yogurt, fromage frais, fromage blanc, faisselle and cheese aisles.

Have I mentioned how much I love living in Normandy?

*The photo's a bit blurry because I was trying to be discreet and snapped it quickly with my phone. I've found that in general, grocery stores in France frown upon their customers taking photos.

Yum! What I wouldn't give for a section of French Cremes here in the USA! I miss those french creams and all you could make with them. Yummy!

Yep. You did it. Feeling REALLY homesick this morning as I look at this picture... Veronique (French Girl in Seattle)

YUM! I have to laugh about the discreet photo-taking, too. I live in Hawaii and we're constantly swamped with tourists taking photos...of our grocery stores. Seems a habit of folks traveling anywhere in the world, and I know I've been shooed away in a Paris market or two :)

This is just one of the reasons I love grocery shopping when we're in France.

Loulou, I'd add Creme Fleurette:-)

What a coincidence! I made a similar picture in my local Monoprix in Cannes, on dec 31.

Bonne Annee!

Crazy I know, but I love going to the supermarkets in France and Italy :-) :-) cannot stand shopping in the UK , bit of a let down sometimes, but I think it is getting a bit better, nonetheless, not the same :-)

DROOL! And for comparison, here in the midwestern United States, grocery stores have shelves like that full of non-dairy creamers and half-n-half. Usually I can find one little row of UHT cream, only one brand and package size. Americans don't know what's good.

The one thing that has surprised me, though, is the additives in all that cream. We finally discovered crème fluide, which seems to be the only one without , unless you go avatar a specialty market. Suggestions welcomed! :-)

Had to laugh at your "discreet" photography - me too! snails in the chiller cabinet, fruit, jars of confit - I get some funny looks but I've not been asked to stop yet! Try the chemist though - they really don't like it but, such great subjects and names! Love the cream pic - miss double cream from the UK though and not found an equivalent in France! Bonne Annee, Janine

Yep. I'm with French Girl...this picture made me homesick too. Even if I have two homes. ;)

And yet, it's so hard to find English double cream. Cream, cream everywhere, but....

The selection is incredible, isn't it? :)

Véronique
Désolée...guess you better get back here soon!

Veronica
I was delighted when I found that one! Had never tried it before and it is delicious.

Sarah
I often ask if I can take photos at the markets. I don't think I've ever been told no. Have been told off in grocery stores though!

And every region has such different things! I guess it's like that in any country though...

La Torontoise
I did! It's the 5th crème listed.

Italian grocery stores are fabulous, aren't they?

Rosie
Those flavored, non-dairy creamers in the US freak me out. If people could only taste the fresh stuff, they would be converted!

I've never noticed, so I'll have to look next time. I usually buy the stuff from the farm now, since we live in cow country.

Janine
I've been told off a couple of times, so am very careful now. Discovering new food is one of the greatest things about living in France. And I continue to discover!
Bonne Année!

I miss Trader Joe's and Whole Foods, but the markets here more than make up for it.

Ann
Because it's English, bien sûr! :) Have only just started seeing Cheddar...

I imagine you'll be coming back soon to get your "fix?"
