Photo du Jour - Pletzels in Paris

Pletzels

I'm addicted to onions.
And for an onion addict, a toasted Parisian pletzel slathered with a generous amount of salt butter is pretty near perfection. Pin It

I'm pretty sure I would eat less if blogs would quit showing things like this.

the freshness is jumping out of the picture!

just read about your cheese week (who knew cheese got mites?) sounds deliriously wonderful.

terribly disappointing but don't give up hope!

Mmmm, and I was just wondering what I could bake with my starter this weekend. Pletzels are now a top contender. :)

This looks a lot like an onion bagel to me, but the origin of the word sounds like "pretzel" or "bretzel"..., what is the origin, anyway? Epicurious didn't enlighten me enough.

If only you would learn some self control...

I took a half a dozen home to my husband and they didn't last more than a few days! Wish we could find them where we live. Pletzels are a true Parisian treat.
Thank for the encouragement!

camille
You should! I'm thinking about making them too. Let me know how they turn out.

Meredith
I know...
I could happily eat these every day. The more onions and dough, the better! With some cheese of course.

Kate
There must be some Jewish bakeries near you?

Betty
A pletzel is softer than a bagel and has no hole. It isn't boiled then baked like a bagel, and the dough is quite different.
Here's a good article: http://www.nytimes.com/2004/12/01/dining/01HANU.html

Diane
Exactly!

Leslie
Me too. I usually bring bagels home from Paris but these are now our favorites.

sarah
I got them at Sacha Finkelsztajn. Go! They're delicious!

If you click on the word "pletzel" in the post, it will take you to a recipe.

Mmm, yes, please! I'm an onion fan too. I can almost feel the chewy squish of the pletzel in my mouth. With a schmear of Philadelphia, peut-être?

Jennifer said...

Ann
Yes, a schmear would be welcome too! If only we could find it down here...

I have never had those in Paris; they look so good!

Oh they look fabulous....I've never seen these in France before. They look like what we called bialis - not sure of the spelling -in the US

They are worth going out of your way for!

Mrs M
They are similar to a bialy, but you can find pletzels in the States as well. They are flatter and more cracker like however.

If you are not in Paris, then come to Buenos Aires, Argentina, dozens of bakeries make Pletzalaj, small ones, big ones, all kinds. and You can buy here the best pastrami in the world as well !!!
