Photo du Jour - le Village

A view across the bare winter vineyards to our village.
The 12th century Château (in the middle) is now divided up into privately owned apartments and low income apartments owned by the village. The church (tower on the left) dates from the 15th and 16th centuries.

There is a grotto in the foothills behind the village with engravings of bears, mammoths, rhinoceros and felines dating from 37,000-30,000 BC and cave paintings and a human footprint dating from 7,000-6,500 BC. Pin It

Is the grotto open to the public?

What a lovely place!

That is amazing - both the beauty and the history. I love places where you feel so connected to the past. Do you visit the grotto often? You are so fortunate!

I was really surprised when I found out.

No, not that I'm aware of.
There is a grill over the entrance and I think you have to apply for permission before you can access the cave.

Moira
It is!

It is so amazing to live surrounded by such history. Not like where we grew up, huh? :)

Hi

I always check out your blog each morning from Calgary, Canada.

I am very familiar with Olonzac and it gives me that connection each morning to the area- thank you.

I hate to be personal but if this is "your "village" have you moved?

Or am I totally confused( I could be!!!!)

Anyways thanks again for sharing your life and touching those you do not know.

Bonjour! Do you have an apartment in Olonzac?
This is where we've lived for the last 6 years. Did you think I was somewhere else? :)
I appreciate your nice comment!

Yes I have an apartment in Olonzac - i share it with a few other couples.
Its part of the Chateau in Olonzac that has been rennovated by a Canadian -dave - broke into apartments and was sold to all residents of Calgary.

I thought you lived in Homps.
But in the picture it seemed to me that the mountains looked too close. Like i said I have been known to be confused.

When you said you were from Calgary I figured you owned an apartment in the Chateau. :)
No, we don't live in Homps.
