Photos du Jour - Une Capitelle

More vineyards in the spring, dotted with white, sweet alyssum.

If you look closely on the upper left, just below the tree line, you'll see une capitelle.

See its doorway?

Here's a close up.
Une capitelle is a dry stone (no mortar) structure used by vignerons and shepherds to store tools, protect livestock and provide temporary shelter. Pin It

Here in Aveyron they're called "cazelles" and I think there's some other name for them too.

Provide temporary shelter from what? I didn't think the weather was that harsh.

They're also called a borie down here.

Yes, the weather can be crazy here! Seriously strong winds all year long, sometimes very cold winters, often very hot summers and dramatic thunderstorms with torrential rain.
You didn't know?
But then you have wonderful summer days that make it all worth it!

I knew there was weather, but I didn't know there was "weather". No bother...it'll be a welcomed change from the mildness(is that a word) of the PNW.

it is a welcome change from the predictable weather in Seattle.
I love the storms here. They're so dramatic!

"Borie" -- I think that's used a bit here too, maybe even more in the Tarn.

Good thing you clued Colleen in on the weather, LOL!

There are a couple of wineries in the area with Borie in their name. I remember looking it up once to find out what it meant.

I hope the weather news didn't scare Colleen. We were quite surprised by the extremes of weather here, as I think a lot of people are.
