The last of the eggplants were harvested from the garden today.
Tonight I'm using them to make ratatouille with the remaining, sad looking zucchini I found at the market on Tuesday and some super ripe - almost too ripe - tomatoes.
A final taste of summer and sunshine on our plates.

Oh, I can hear the barely veiled sadness in your voice. We're experiencing an Indian Summer here, but still I'm sad to think that soon there'll be no fresh local produce like this available. What shall we do?
robyn,
it is sad. I'll miss picking tomatoes and basil for salad and little onions and eggplant.
But there are a couple of squash growing out there and I love apples and pears, so we'll survive.
Somehow....
I'm jealous. Our garden was a bust this year, otherwise we'd be saying the same thing. Now we're just hoping that we have summer next year.
Our remaining eggplants look like brown cherry tomatoes.

You really had a short (nonexistent)summer this year. Ours wasn't that great either, but we didn't have much rain like you guys. In fact, now were having drought conditions.
I don't have a great love for gardening so if next summer looks bad, you're welcome to come borrow our garden! :)
It's a bittersweet time of year, isn't it?

It really is! I love the cooler days, squash, wearing scarves and the autumn colors, but will miss swimming and the fresh tomatoes, melon, zucchini, etc.
I know I'll miss the salads with tomato and basil too, but for some reason I've already put melons behind me -- I'm just not in the mood for them anymore anyway! It's as if I overdosed on melons. They were selling them still at my local market last weekend, and that was the last thing I wanted.
But I did make a yummy apple-pear-ginger crumble yesterday afternoon... I'm with you on the apples and pears! YUM.

apple-pear-ginger crumble! sounds like a fantastic dessert!
I love crumbles and crisps.
As the weather cools off I crave different things. Gone are our rosé drinking, hot summer days and now we're back to red and craving soup!
