Photo du Jour

Evening light on the Canal du Midi. Pin It

Oh, your picture brings back wonderful memories of two barge trips we did on France's canals. It's been some years ago, but we so enjoyed ourselves. One was on the Midi and I have a photo somewhere that's very similar to yours. Thanks for giving me a little bit of nostalgia.

you're very welcome! Glad to have brought back some good memories for you.
We've never been on a barging trip, just taken a 4 hour cruise on a small boat.
Sometimes we take a picnic to a little lock that's about 10 minutes from our house and watch all the activity

Lovely late summer light! I was on Cape Cod this weekend and admired the light there too. I've always dreamed of doing a barge trip through France. One day...

Ahhhhh, how beautiful. We are coming to the Languedoc in September near the Canal du Midi and want to barge! Thank you for the photo. We will have two weeks to enjoy the Aude and surrounding areas. Cannot wait!!

The Canal du Midi is very popular as a barge vacation destination. The canals in Burgundy look really beautiful too.
If you ever decide to head to the Canal du Midi, you'll have to let me know!

How exciting! I'm sure you'll love the area and all it has to offer. You can rent a barge, I think, by the day or week and there are short 3 hour cruises too. Béziers has a spectacular series of 9 locks.

My favorite place on the Canal du Midi is in Trebes, about 20 minutes south of my house. The Moulin restaurant just east of the docks/barge rental area (around a slight south bend in the canal) has several very decent wines and a nice salad bar that makes a fine lunch. Don't eat the cassoulet. There are 3 locks right on the edge of the patio eating area and watching the folks 'navigate' the locks is very pleasing way to spend lunch. I've loved the canal from the first time I saw it and have spent many days just driving as close to its banks as roads will allow. I know it isn't very clean, but its truly a beautiful sight every time I come upon it. Oh, and thanks for the recipes, Loulou, I'm cooking mostly outside so not to heat my kitchen, these are wonderful. ds

My friend, who lives close to Trebes, goes there all the time and always says good things about it. I still haven't been there, but will get there one of these days!
Glad you like the recipes. Not using the oven often is necessary to keep our house cool during the heat.
