The 2016 Best Baguette In Paris

Bag of baguettes

This is the photo that got me through the door.

Every year, in addition to a handful of industry professionals, the Mayor of Paris chooses 6 members of the general public to sit on the jury of le Grand Prix de la Baguette de Tradition Française de la Ville de Paris or the Best Baguette in Paris competition.
For the last couple of years, with fingers crossed, I (along with I'm sure thousands of others) submitted my email to the lottery, but with no success.

This year the Mayor decided to use Instagram as a way to select the lucky 6.
Two weeks ago they put the word out, asking the public to post a photo of their favorite boulangerie, baker or baguette with the hashtag #MeilleureBaguetteDeParis.
I guess someone at the Mayor's office liked my photo, because last Monday I received this comment"Bonjour, vous avez été sélectionnée pour participer au jury qui élira la #MeilleureBaguetteDeParis. Félicitations :) Le jury aura lieu le jeudi 17 mars à 14h."

I was ecstatic, to say the least!

Heading to dinner with @eatlivtravwrite and @monicashaw. Baguette in hand. #paris

This afternoon I had the honor of sitting in a room with like-minded bread enthusiasts, surrounded by piles of golden, chewy baguettes, where we spent several hours judging each loaf on texture, baking, appearance, aroma and of course, flavor.

I'll tell you all about my experience as a judge later, but for now, without further ado, the winner of the 2016 Best Baguette in Paris award is the Boulangerie La Parisienne at 48 rue Madame, 75006. Congratulations to bakers Mickaël Reydellet and Florian Charles!

The Dark Side to Instagram?

Pink bunny iPhone cover.

Apparently I've been going along, innocently sharing photos with Instagram, thinking it was a service to have fun with and to be enjoyed.
Recently, however, I've learned that there's a dark side to Instagram.

According to a couple of articles I've read in the last week, the majority of people out there feel threatened and belittled by the photos their friends are posting of their "perfect" lives on Instagram.

Seriously?
Is this true?  Do people really feel this way?

Fallen #normandy #apples

Ok, let's back up a minute. Remember once upon a time, a long, long time ago, when we still took photos with a camera that used actual film, and that film was developed into actual prints?  Then those prints were put into albums that we would then share with friends and family?  Photos of our parties, vacations, kids, pets, etc.
Did we consider these photos threatening?  Was there really an ulterior motive to these photo albums?  Were we really just trying to show each other up and make our friends and family jealous of how perfect we were?

No, we weren't.

It was about sharing our lives, not about jealousy or a petty "My life is better than your life" sentiment.

Happy wine.

So, getting back to this whole feeling-threatened-by-Instagram thing...

Would seeing photos of the laundry piled up in my bedroom or the messy stacks of papers on our coffee table help you feel better about yourself?  Probably not.
Sharing beautiful moments, a fantastic meal, a funny sign, our cats, our kids, our shoes, whatever, doesn't mean we're trying to show how perfect our lives are. And if you think it does, then I beg of you to lighten up. Because there is no dark side. There is no ulterior motive.

Remember, nobody has a perfect life. Nobody.

Autumn Obsessed

Normandy autumn leaves

When our friends left to go back to the US in mid October they left something behind as a gift...an iPhone 4!

I've never owned a smartphone before, but it sure as heck didn't take me long to dive right in to the wonderful world of Instagram. It has taken my obsession with capturing the light and colors of autumn to a whole new level. I'm having far too much fun!

I owe them. Big time.
