For All You Cheese Lovers Out There

French Cheese

Paris By Mouth now has an informative Tour de Fromage that offers cheese tastings at several fromageries around town and will introduce you to a wide variety of the more than 500 cheeses produced in France.

Notes on Cheese, The Murray's Cheese Notebook is just the kind of thing I needed a few years ago when I started keeping tasting notebooks.

Did you know that French goat's cheese had it's own ambassador

Formaticum and the Brooklyn Slate Co. have created the Cheese Survival Kit.
The only thing missing from that bag is a nice, big wedge of cheese!

Brie de Meaux

When I'm researching a new cheese, I turn to these three books;  Mastering Cheese: Lessons for Connoisseurship from a Maître Fromager by Max McCalman, The Cheese Primer by Steven Jenkins and French Cheese (Eyewitness Series).

I love these downloadable Cheese Tasting Note Cards from Culture magazine.
So practical!

Pike Place Market hosts the Seattle Cheese Festival the weekend of May 19-20, 2012. Or if you happen to be in Provence that weekend, check out the Fête du Fromage à Banon, celebrating the village's namesake fromage de chèvre.

Ah jeez, I wish I had access to those boxes of cheese...or at least the opportunity to be near them. Love your post. I have never been to France, but took French in high school (back in the day). I did a report on food from Provence and have wanted to visit there ever since. :)

I'm glad I could help! Have fun at the festival and please let me know how it was.

Julia
Maybe it's time you come and taste some French cheese for yourself. :)

I can attest to the stellar walking tour! They're VERY knowledgeable about cheese. You'll learn things you didn't even know could be possible. And the tasting..... the tasting!

I wish I was going to be Provence when the Banon festival takes place in May. Unfortunately, that won't be the case. But since we love Banon cheese, we are going to there when we are back in Provence at the end of March.

Thanks for the recommendation. Knowing the people behind the company, I'm sure it is a great (and delicious) tour!

Well, Banon is a wonderful place to visit, any time of the year. Enjoy!

I luuuuv your cheese posts (especially the one where you counted 10 different kinds of cheese in your fridge). We get only a itty bitty smidgen of what France has to offer so when the french market comes to town, we go to market!

You should! I know part of the Paris by Mouth team and trust their knowledge of everything French.

Thank you!
Italy has some amazing cheese as well, but there is something very special about les fromages français.
