La Fête du Fromage - Briquette de l'Angoumois

Briquette de l'Angoumois

Well, it's official.
After several years of tasting French cheese for la Fête du Fromage, it appears that I've exhausted almost every single cheese supply in a 60 mile radius. I've been to the village markets and to les Halles in Narbonne and Béziers, and I've done all the driving around the region to visit the small farms.

The obvious next step was to find a website or two that would deliver some French cheese right to my door. So that's exactly what I did.

Briquette de l'Angoumois

After searching though dozens of promising looking websites, (which turned out to be nul as they only offered big name cheeses that I've already tasted or were "out of stock" of virtually everything), I finally found la Chèvrerie Jousseaume. This farm in the Poitou-Charentes offers a range of intriguing looking fromages de chèvre, including la Taupinière, an unusual goat's cheese that I picked up in Paris a few years ago and absolutely loved.

The first one we tasted was Briquette de l'Angoumois. What a gem!
Its flavor is a full bodied mix of rich chalkiness, soft milk and a hint of spice.
It has a typical goat's cheese, barnyard aroma and its texture is dense, smooth and slightly dry in the center and soft and runny around the edges. Super bon!

It was perfect with a glass of cold rosé.

Ok. Now that's a hard life you have over there in Southern France. It is 5:00pm here in Seattle and I just read your post. You have made me long for goat cheese, I don't have anything near as appealing as your selection in my fridge. Dommage. Bon appetit! Veronique aka French Girl in Seattle

I can't quite imagine mail ordering cheese. Aren't the packages a bit...aromatic? What if you aren't around to get the package and they get annoyed with it at La Poste? The cheese itself looks delicious, though.

I don't know if I would like to mail order cheeses but I would like to taste your Briquette de l'Angoumois. How many French cheeses have you tasted so far? have you kept track?

Time to hit the Sancerre/Chavignol region for delicious goat cheese.
Your love of cheese is inspiring.

Looks amazing. I love your list of cheeses you've tried. This looks like a worthy cheese to add to the list. One of the reasons I love your blog is due our shared love of cheese, wine and french markets!

I'm doing my best to support French fromagers. :)

It depends on what kind of cheese it is. Our friends sent us some Vieux Boulogne and the box stunk to high heaven!
Barrie was home last week to sign for the box, so there wasn't a problem. I'll be ordering more in the future.

It came in 48 hours and the cheese was packed on ice. Also, it isn't very hot right now so I wasn't worried.
Click on the "French Cheeses" tab on the top of my blog (just under the header) for the full list. This one was #200.

Can I go with you?
