The Fate of Maurice and His Friends

Maurice and Co. had a wonderful vacation away from their everyday lives of having to forage for food, hide from predators and keep out from under the feet of giant gardeners. They slept their days away, only to emerge at sundown for an evening of eating and frolicking.

As it goes, all vacations must come to an end and Maurice and his friend's vacation ended yesterday.

I couldn't do it. I was giving them names for heaven's sake!

They were set free last night to live out the rest of their days eating our lettuce, cilantro and tomatoes.

And I have to say I'm relieved to have them out of my kitchen. For all of those out there who can raise animals and then eat them, I commend you.
I obviously couldn't! Pin It

Whew. I was concerned for Maury and his pals. I once looked a turkey in the eye that was slaughtered later that day. I didn't eat Henry or any other Turkey for YEARS. So I know exactly how you feel. I am sure they are good and confused now!

LOL...I bet they are telling all their slimy friends what a nurturing time they had at the Spa Chez Loulou ;-

I am so glad to hear that. I had the feeling that you would not be able to eat them.
BTW, each day I look forward to your post for beautiful photos and tales of life in France.
Thank you.

It was hard to look at them every day. I felt so guilty.
My husband finally said, "you're not really going to be able to eat them are you?"
That did it for me.
(I'm such a softy)

bonjour! I've often listened to your podcasts and read about your picnics and cavorting around Paris (with envy I might add).
Someday I would love to have a drink or coffee with you - I'll be in Paris for a few days in September.
I'm sure Maurice and Co. are currently sliding their way across our garden, munching everything in their path.

Spa Chez Loulou. Yes, that is exactly what they experienced! :)

Glad you enjoy the photos and hearing about life here. Why are you anonymous? Reveal yourself and come out of your shell (no pun intended). :)
You were correct about the snails. They were just too cute to eat!

I've been wondering about this since you first named them. I figured you wouldn't eat them, since people rarely eat what they name, but I was very curious.

It was a fun venture - thank you for sharing!

you surely know how to maintain suspense !
But I was sure you wouln't be able to cook them nor eat them ! I took a bet on that.
Although I've lived all my childhood in a small village where people had to "grow their food", chicken, poultry .... I just couldn't see them kill and prepare it!
I hardly can prepare fishes or game some friends sometimes give me.
My husband, a farmer's son, just tells me that I have never been hungry enough ......

I could not do it either.

I should have realized it myself. I was still searching for escargot recipes Saturday morning!

If I had grown up raising my own food perhaps I would feel differently. Also, I know I could learn to raise chickens, etc. and kill them. But since I don't have to, I am happy to let others do it.
I hate gutting fish too!

Glad I'm not the only one! :)

You could always take a crash course from Novella! :)
Were you able to clean out your cheese cave? I thought the snails made a terrible mess in the pen I had them in. Took me forever to clean it out.

we are never full
"As the Snail Turns." I love it! Glad you enjoyed the Escargot Chronicles.
